Camera obscura, the dark room, has never stopped fascinating Marja Pirilä. But to her, the dark room itself is also a part of the motive. By being inside the room with her camera, furnished or empty, populated or not, she captures the world inside and the world outside within the same picture - although one is upside down.

The darkness, silence, slowness - and the light - in the method results in pictures where you can reflect on the world and the reality from new angles. It will also be a journey in the mental landscape, the subconscious as well as conscious.

The result will be beautiful, exciting, creepy, unreal - yes, magic.

Camera obscura, det mörka rummet, har aldrig slutat att fascinera Marja Pirilä.  Men för henne är själva det mörka rummet också en del av motivet. Genom att med sin kamera befinna sig inne i rummet, möblerat eller tomt, befolkat eller inte, fångar hon världen inne och världen utanför i en och samma bild – om än den ena upp och ned.

Mörkret, tystnaden, långsamheten – och ljuset – i metoden resulterar i bilder där man kan fundera på världen och verkligheten utifrån nya vinklar. Det blir en resa också i det mentala landskapet, det undermedvetna såväl som medvetna.

Resultatet blir vackert, spännande, kusligt, overkligt – ja, magiskt.

The camera obscura phenomenon, at once simple and magical, never ceases to fascinate me, says Marja Pirilä. With it I have worked intensely ever since 1996.
For me camera obscura is a method by which to survey the living environment
and mental landscapes, summoning subconscious feelings into the light of day.

In camera obscura darkness, silence and slowness compel one to contemplate the world in a novel way, from new angles. When the space transforms into a ”dark room” it conjures up the core and magic of photography again and again.That is when I feel most acutely that I am working with light.

"Interior/Exterior" (1996–) is the most extensive and long-lasting project of mine accomplished with the camera obscura method.  Besides I have made three other series with this technique: "Milavida" (2012-13), "Speaking House" (2004–2006) and "Inner Landscapes"  (2009–2011).

I have also designed and constructed many different kind of three dimensional camera obscuras with photographer Petri Nuutinen.

My latest retrospective photo book "Carried by Light" was launched in June 2014.
The earlier photo books "Speaking Light"  (2006) "CAMERA OBSCURA Interior/Exterior" (2002) and  "The Eyes of the Fingertips Are Opening" (1993) are already sold out. The book "Inner Landscapes" (2012) I made in collaboration with
Japanese ceramic attests Tomoko Kurahara and Satoko Sai.

Many public and private art collections in Finland, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands,
Italy and France include art works of Marja Pirilä.

She have had dozens of solo exhibitions
and participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Finland and abroad.

In 2000 she received The Finnish State Award for Photography.

Camera obscura-fenomenet, både enkelt och magiskt, slutar aldrig att fascinera mig. Det har jag arbetat intensivt med ända sedan 1996, säger Marja Pirilä. För mig är Camera obscura en metod att undersöka den levande miljön och mentala landskapet som framkallar undermedvetna känslor i dagsljuset.

Tystnaden och långsamheten i det mörka rummet får  oss att kontemplera världen på ett nytt sätt, ur nya vinklar. När utrymmet förändras till ”ett mörkt rum” frammanar det själen och fotografins magi om och om igen. Det är då jag känner mest intensivt att jag arbetar med ljus. ”Interior/Exterior” (1996-) är det mest omfattande och långvariga av mina projekt utfört med Camera Obscura-metoden.

Dessutom har Marja Pirilä gjort tre andra serier med denna teknik: ”Milavida” (2012-13), ”Speaking House” (2004-2006) och ”Inner Landscapes” (2009-2011). Jag har också skapat och konstruerat många olika tredimensionella Camera Obscura tillsammans med fotograf Petri Nuutinen.

Hennes senaste retrospektiva fotobok ”Carried by Light” lanserades i juni 2014. De tidigare fotoböckerna ”Speaking Light” (2006), ”CAMERA OBSCURA Interior/Exterior” (2002) och ”The Eyes of the Fingertips Are Opening” (1993) är också slutsålda. Marja Piriläs konst finns hos många institutioner och i privata samlingar i bland annat Finland, Tyskland, Sverige, Nederländerna, Italien och Frankrike. Honhar haft dussintals soloutställningar och deltagit i otaliga grupputställningar, både i Finland och utomlands.

År 2000 erhöll hon The Finnish State Award for Photography.
